Make Your Garden Attractive To Wild Birds

There are a variety of ways to attract the wild birds. Providing them with the food they enjoy and a safe place for them to eat is the easiest way. Bird feeders are the best way of providing food for them. During the winter, when food is hard to find they can be especially helpful.

Feeding stations can be set up with food to attract different species. Feeders specially designed to hold the thistle seeds loved by finches can be bought. Use tube feeders to keep seeds dry and prevent them from spilling on the ground. A window bird feeder could also be used to watch wild birds feed from the comfort of your home.

There are bird feeders available that have been specially designed for woodpeckers, goldfinches and hummingbirds. Find somewhere safe from predators and close to your bird house. Damp encourages mold so check daily that the food is dry. Spilled food around bird feeders will attract ants and wasps so make sure yopu clean it up every day.

Feeding during the winter is most beneficial for wild birds but shortages occur during other seasons as well. Shortages can occur at any time of year so put out food to help them whatever the season. Food suitable for fledglings should be provided during the breeding season as shortages can have a severe effect on them.

Provide water in the form of water pans or bird baths which also provides a safe place for the birds to clean their feathers and preen. You should provide water in containers at different levels for different species. Fill shallow containers or pans with water and place away from the noise of birds feeding at your bird feeders. Attract the wild birds with the sounds of running water. You can attract birds by placing a water dripper on your bird bath.

The birds will have a better sense of security if you provide a natural environment. An attractive place can be provided for them by allowing an area to grow naturally.
